To Son, With Love

Robyn - 35
1 child – son (21 mo)
Southfield, MI

I recently got up the energy to make good on a promise that I‘d made to myself 21 months ago. That is, to write my son letters. Why you ask? I want to chronicle his young years in a way where he can read about them and feel what was going on at that time.
I said that I was going to start when he was born and one day turned into five, turned into five months which turned into today. But doggone it, I am doing it now. I want him to know what his mommy was like when she was ______ years old. I intend to do this once a month or at least once every three months (so that there’ll be something interesting to talk about) because life can get boring and mommies and daddies can get tired, yet he grows and he grows.
I know that he won’t appreciate it when he’s young (unless he turns out to be a very sensitive child), so I don’t intend to show it to him until he gets into high school….maybe college! This will be part of his lineage, part of his legacy to his grandchildren and so on; a documented griot’s version of the most precious time of his and my life. I want him to know me for me; something that time cannot replace or take away. They say the mother/son bond is very strong and I hope this will always serves as a reminder that I am his first love and that I always will be in his corner.

This a good idea, and one I also do for my kids. I write them letters on each of their birthdays, my birthday, special occassions, and sometimes just because. You are so right, the time just goes. This is a good reminder for me to start updating their 'baby' books more regularly.

My son will be 4 weeks on Thursday, and I, too, have been meaning to write him letters from Day 1. However, the c-section recovery got the best of me, then life kicked in! I finally started the first letter Friday night, but I fell asleep half-way through. Your post was a nice reminder to get back on it. I guess for things like this we have to MAKE time because one thing is for sure: as long as they are with us, they are not going to stop growing and changing; and we certainly are not going to get this time back! Best wishes with your family and your letters!

That's an awesome idea. Wow. A mother and her child do have a very special bond. I'm glad that you are doing this. I'm sure he will appreciate that you've captured these special moments.

This is a beautiful act and something I have been doing on and off (more off than on) for 11 years. It is amazing to go back and see what my life was like then.

Hi ladies! (and men) :-)

This is Robyn and I am so glad that you enjoyed my post! I so wish I had letters to look back on because they tell an on-going story of "life as I know it". It is always interesting to me, to know how and what parents were like. I am glad you liked my post!

awww....good idea!

my beloved writes to our son, even though he's only 5 months old. but i read them to him & think it's great. i feel you on waiting to do things. i still haven't filled out my little one's baby book. couple that w/ the scrapbook i want to make, and i'm so far behind on all of my mommy projects! but in due time. as long as we get to them, our children will enjoy what we have worked on.

and K&J...i feel you on the c-section. it took enough energy just to get up & tend to my son, let alone try to write some letters. we will get to it.

I wanted to do that too when I had the first one. It is now 14 years later and 4 more kids later and I still never did it the way I planned. I do however keep a prayer journal from month to month with the revelations that G-d gives me and what I think that day. Still it's not what I'd like to do. I urge you to do it. Don't wait another day. And do it up--fingd one of those beautiful leather bound journals that will last to do it in (I love those).
