Objectifying Black Babies...A Teacher's Comment to My Child

Recently in one of my daughter's classes her teacher said she wanted to find a black man to have black babies with because 'they are so cute'. She then singled my daughter out, the only black person in the class, to ask her if she agreed with her. I-bop said she tried to be non-comittal and change the subject, but the teacher persisted. Then after school i-bop went to talk it over with the assistant principal, who then talks to the teacher about it.
Then this woman went to the drama practice (i-bop is rehearsing, she's in the spring play) all crying and AGAIN putting i-bop on the spot, talking crap about how it's an 'aesthetic' thing like preferring the color pink and she just loves black people blah blah blah. Then she left.
I am writing a letter to her & the assitant principal but I am super-pissed right now. I have to be careful how I word things lest these people dismiss me and i-bop as 'angry black women'.

Ok here is the letter I just emailed to her:
Hello Ms. ------,
My daughter ------ is a student in a Spanish language class of yours. She bought to my attention comments you made yesterday (2/28/07) about wanting to find a black man to have a child with, because you feel black babies are so cute. You also singled her out to ask her opinion on the matter, I presume because as the sole black person in the class you wanted her to validate your opinion.
I find your comments offensive and problematic to say the least. I am certain that you meant no harm, however I am unable to ignore or excuse your conduct because I am appalled at your lack of sensitivity and unprofessional behavior. Your job is to teach, not to express to students your racial preferences in regard to your future mate. Regardless of the context this subject came up in, as the teacher and the adult you should have re-directed the conversation and kept your race opinions to yourself.
I also feel compelled to tell you why your comments are so ignorant, because you repeated them again when you apologized to ------, and again when you called my home and discussed this with my husband (------). This tells me you are truly confused as to why your comments are ignorant and offensive. Ms. ------, blackness is no more a monolith than whiteness is, but that, among other things, is implied by your comments. Not to mention your complete and utter objectification of black babies and black people. Black babies are not little inanimate dolls for you to play with and talk about how cute they are because of maybe their features, skin color, and hair is so different from yours. They are living breathing people just like white babies.
After ------ told me the things you said when you came down to her drama practice (how it's just an 'aesthetic' thing and it's your 'preference') it became painfully obvious to me that you are simply unaware of how obtuse your feelings are in regards to this matter. Ms. ------, choosing a partner and subsequent child is not like picking a color scheme for your house.
There is so much range and diversity among black people, just like among white people or any other 'race', but you seem unaware of that. Your comment that you'd like to find a black man to have a black baby with indicates that you think we are all the same. Which black man? Will he be the same religion as you? Will he share similar political views? Have the same morals, values, and code of ethics as you? Or are those things irrelevant to you as long as he is black and can give you a cute black baby to play with? Ms. ------, I am told you have grown white children. Surely when you chose to be with their father, there were a lot of things you considered. Understand that when choosing to be with someone not of your race background the very same factors should be considered as well. If you are unable or unwilling to understand that, at the very least keep your fetishizing of black people to yourself.
I am certain that you still do not see your comments as wrong since you repeated them 3 times. You probably feel they were benign or even positive comments. I want you to understand I am not attacking you; rather my concern is about what you said and its effect on my child. I would like you to understand that racism isn't only about hating on other races. It is also embedded in the seemingly innocent ways that we think, talk, and respond to a race not our own. On the surface your comments may seem like a benevolent statement but when looked at through the lenses of American history and a person of the race being discussed, they are very rooted in racist ideas.
I would also like to point out to you, that whether ----- or another black person was in the class or not, your comments were inappropriate to the white students as well. You should not assume all white people believe erroneous ideas like this such as yourself, and you did your white students a grave disservice by assuming they did or that they would not be offended. In short, it was wrong of you to discuss your
racial preferences in choosing a mate to your students, period. You owe the whole class an apology.
Finally, your coming to ------ at her drama practice being all loud and crying was wrong. While I appreciate your apology...Thank You! I resent your putting her on the spot in front of her peers again and I am deeply saddened that you repeated your statements again to her. And the crying...give me a break. Ms. ------, what on earth did YOU have to cry about? And I am struggling to understand why you came at my daughter like that. As her teacher and an adult you are already in a position of authority over her. I feel your crying was a manipulative ploy to make her feel responsible for your mistake and that it was her fault simply because she spoke up. Perhaps it was subconscious, but surely upon reflection you can see why I feel your response was selfish, completely disregarded ------'s feelings, and made her feel bad for speaking up about your highly inappropriate comments.
------ did nothing wrong here. She tried to avoid being drawn in the discussion in the first place and she then voiced her concerns to the assistant principal. We have lived in ------, a primarily white, conservative community, for going on 7 years and in all this time my daughter has been a model of self-restraint when dealing with racist comments, from out-and-out racial slurs to comments like yours from students. She is not known for being a 'race-agitator' or as being overly sensitive to race comments, Ms. ------, because she is not. ------ tries her best to get along with the majority white population of students here, and she often, quite often ignores race comments said to her at the high school by the white students in the interest of getting along. So when she expressed how disturbed she was by what you said and your subsequent apology I could tell she was deeply hurt. The one time she speaks up to a person of authority the teacher acts like it's her fault? How dare you.
I am forwarding this letter to the principal and assistant principal. I am also writing a letter to the superintendent of ------ City Schools, including this letter and a suggestion of sensitivity training in regards to racial issues for ------ City teachers. It is not my desire or intention to get you into any trouble, rather I want a written record that this occurred and my suggestion of sensitivity training noted, if nothing else. I am disturbed that any teacher in ------ City schools would make a comment such as this. The reason we decided to live here was because of the caliber of the school system. I am truly dumbfounded that a teacher would make such comments as I did not expect that from a professional within the school system. You have deeply disappointed me, Ms. ------. I hope you do not further disappoint me by acting out against ------ academically or singling her out in any way regarding this matter again. Rest assured, if you do, I will take appropriate measures.

Personally, I think the letter could end at this point. The teacher is obviously not mentally stable and it appears that she should be referred for psychological counseling by her employer. The length and detail of the written complaint runs the risk of taking a single disturbed individual's actions to a broad based vent on an entire nation that could muddy the picture her required discipline. Just my opinion on nipping the problem in the bud. Stick to the facts and eliminate the bad seed.
I agree...that was a rather lengthy complaint...cut it short a little...it will still get the point across... Write now the letter does sound like the ANGRY BLACK WOMAN versus the concerned mother!
I think that having an experience like this brings with it a lot of emotion and history. It is in the natural order of parenting children and certainly black children, to be fiercely protective of them when it come to issues having to do with race because we understand that who they are in this regard is a gift and not a curse or commodity and often times something they will have to learn to embrace (and maybe over and over again) in their lives. In America, teaching this is often tricky terrain.
I think Trula’s reaction was honest, which is what we need to allow ourselves first; the freedom of honesty. I have experienced similar situations of underhanded (although overt in my opinion) comments regarding race with my son and I think it imperative that we as what the Warrior Method calls “Warrior Parents” stand nose to nose with the reality that the system in which we are educating our children does not often have their best interest at heart. This may be because they simply do not know how or have not been taught that our children’s interests and the things you can and can not say to them considering the history of this country, should be considered outside of the mainstream (read: male, Eurocentric) paradigm. But the fact that many educators are oblivious to their offensive behavior and the damaging effects that it can have on our children is not our fault or our problem. I think it is with great fortitude that a mother like Trula sits down with pen and pad in hand and shows this group to themselves, lest they never know and harm another unsuspecting student.
I think it's a good letter. True, it is a little long and the reader may not listen to all of it or understand it, but you make several good points and they all need to be said. Some of it will get through, hopefully. If not to that teacher then maybe to the others in the school system.
I moved from the Cleveland area, and I know how things can be. Please update us on the outcome.

I went to the high school and met with the principal and asst. principal. The meeting went ok, the principal was just floored at the way this teacher behaved. She told me it was her suggestion that the teacher go and apologize to i-bop at drama practice, but she assumed that the teacher would simply ask to speak to i-bop in private and apologize without repeating the comments. She seemed genuinely shocked that the teacher 'apologized' the way she did. The asst. principal told me he did not talk to the teacher at first, school protocol called that he immediately notify the principal after learning of the incident. He told me his first concern was/is for ibop, which I appreciate.
One rough spot, the principal said that she didn't think anything was said in malice, which I agreed with (and said as much in my letter) but told her that was irrelevant. She repeated it, I repeated my feelings and told her I felt like she was intentionally not hearing me. She then said what she meant was that if she felt the teacher meant any harm or malice in any way, she would be out the door. Ok.
Overall it was a good meeting, I spoke very softly and made sure to keep my face as impassive as possible. The principal said due to confidentiality rules within the teachers union she could not tell me what disciplinary action would be taken, but she wanted to assured me that action would be taken. She also agreed with me that the teacher should apologize to i-bop without repeating her wacky comments and she should apologize to the entire class as well.
Mercury Man and I are meeting again with the teacher, the asst. principal, the principal,and possibly a union rep. on Tuesday. I want to talk to her face-to-face about this, for sure.
I am still working on my letter to the superintendent of schools, I had a busy afternoon after coming back from the high school and I haven't had a chance to finish it.

When i-bop came home from school she said the teacher did indeed apologize to the whole class, yay! now I just hope this meeting with her turns out ok.

Every parent needs to take the steps they are most comfortable with in dealing with the educators who are with their children eight, sometimes nine hours per day, five days per week.
I am not critiquing Trula's choice to send an email but I am curious as to why an email versus an immediate call for an immediate face-to-face, roundtable meeting? I have my reservations and feelings about this modern, perceived method of communication called "email" (that don't need to be outlined here) ... just curious..?
Make it short and sweet. It will be more effective in getting your point across.

How it ended: I met with the teacher and principal and asst. principal, it went well. Mercury Man, my husband, couldn't come as he had an emergency meeting at his own school (he is a special ed. teacher). The teacher apologized without trying to explain it again with the comments, and she said she realized how ignorant it was. She explained why she lost control with the crying bit but apologized because she realized now how it would affect a teenager in this situation.
She is really nice and seemed contrite and sincere, and I am glad I got to talk to her face-to-face and found out how this whole thing even became a topic for discussion. She also expressed such dismay at hurting i-bop's feelings, and that she was thankful to have learned something from this. I am actually glad i-bop has her for a teacher, because many other white people would have been highly resistant to learning anything from this and would have resented anyone daring to tell them they were wrong in this situation. I am also glad the assistant principal and principal handled this so promptly.
I am in particular impressed with the principal, as she made sure to stress to the teacher why this was wrong racially and that it was very important that they are sensitive to all of their students, which includes students who are not white, and she also stressed to the teacher not engaging with the students as if they were her peers. She is a very effective administrator and I am glad she is in charge at the high school. I hope she stays there until my sons are out of high school, but I would not be surprised if a person with her skills moved on to even more challenging and/or lucrative work. She rocks.
I also talked with the superintendent and discussed bringing in some anti-racism training for teachers in the school system; that is being worked on.
To address some points bought up here:
to those who felt I came across as angry, would you clarify? Is it possible that you are filtering my words through your own stereotypes? I truly do not feel I came across as angry.
Why email: this is the preferred method of communication within this school system and the quickest and easiest way to reach teachers and the principal, superintendent. A call would have required I go through several people and ended up in voice mail to boot.
On length: I wanted to stress in detail to this woman why what she said was so wrong, as she did not seem to understand since she kept repeating it. and since she felt no compunction about putting my child on the spot and making her uncomfortable, I felt compelled to return the favor by making her read this long old letter.
Again, thanks for reading and the comments! We are helping each other by sharing how we handle race conflicts regarding our children.

BMD and so many of the mother's who visit are grateful that you and other mamas like you share their experiences here for us to glean from. I am glad this situation worked out in your families favor. Many times on this journey we have to do what we comes most instinctive until we learn to refine our way. And I can attest to the fact that phoning the school leads most effectively to voicemail hell.

My question is why do these people live in such a racist school district.
Certainly there are places where blacks are treated better.
To be honest and fair Roderick I think a couple of things are at work; first, many of these schools where the teachers are fumbling over themselves when it comes to how they deal with our children are in neighborhoods where these mothers (myself included) have made a conscious effort to live because of “better public schools” ie. better resources, parent involvement, advance curriculum and the like. These neighborhoods are also where we feel our children will be “safest” in terms of their physical well-being with a lesser likelihood that they would succumb to some of the perils of living in a more diverse yet as such, conscious environment.
With that being said, I know I personally was shocked by the level of ignorance and disregard for my sons emotional and social well-being in the classroom and have agonized often about what to do about it. Both logistically and as a matter of principle, it often seems like a nightmare. What I have done in the interim is make strides to shore up his esteem and instill in him an assuredness that the world he lives in is not “fair” and “just” and sometimes because of the way in which our society chooses to educate itself (television, glossy magazine and “the news”) the notions they end up with are often skewed and nowhere near reality, which is why they are so wrong so much of the time when to comes to their perceptions about him and other black boys.
It is a prickly situation to negotiate but negotiate it we must – the best way we know how.

To further clarify my question, Roderick: Ohio is a state that has a mostly white population. Most of the black people live in the large cities; Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, with Cleveland being the city that has the largest black population. There are a few small suburb cities that have lots of black people, but even in in those suburbs and the big cities racism is a problem. For example in Cincinnati and Cleveland blacks report high levels of police brutality and overt and covert racism in the schools.
This could have happened anywhere in Ohio, and for that matter, anywhere in the United States. If you know of a place where there are no white people with racist ideas who may cross paths with my children, I would sincerely like to know where.

But unfortunately and to our ultimate point, they can not keep it from happening again. In light of this, my questions becomes, how to prepare the children; make them aware without making them self-conscious, make them ready without making them angry and defensive?
Well for one I think we can prepare them by handling our own responses to racism. When ibop was still in a school in Cleveland, I often saw black parents 'going off' on white teachers over something racist they said or did to or around their children. While anger at these situations is justifiable, we can choose our response and choose to channel our anger into effective ways of dealing with racist white people and situations like this. When our children see us very calmly dealing with these situations, they learn from that.
They become ready by being exposed to white culture and experiencing being around whites in different settings. You don't have to live in a mostly white area to do this, but it is very helpful for our kids to have exposure to white people other than as authority figures. So when they encounter a racist white person, they know that all white people are not racist and this lessens the impact of the encounter than if they did not. I know of black children 'in the hood' whose only exposure to whites is as authority figures i.e teachers, doctors, police. They tend to have a very narrow view of whites and to be very self conscious and apprehensive of white people, and also very unprepared to deal with overt racism.
I also think it's important that we talk about our history as black people in this country, about slavery and how we survived it and how our people perservered. I know a lot of black people are into telling their kids 'We come from kings and queens in Africa' but I think it is equally important if not more so to emphasize that we come from people who survived slavery. That is a tremendous achievement and something to be proud of. We are also one of the few cultures of people who have resisted assimilation and annihilation. I am not trying to be dramatic; it is true. Our kids need to know that. With my own kids I know this has strengthened their self-esteem and pride in their culture/race.
A little late but I agreed that the letter was a little lengthy. But beyond that I'm glad that the in-person meeting with the teacher turned out as it did. Not only were you likely able to dispell any Angry Black Woman-ness that may have come from the letter, you also 1) showed white people that Black kids also have loving, caring, attentive and intelligent parents and 2) learned that despite the comment, the white teacher in question was clueless as opposed to viscious. I think we tend to react as if the latter is more often the case.

Thanks robyn, although my intent was not to show white people that black children have loving, caring parents. Really, I have moved beyond caring what white people, especially racist white people, think about black people. because I have learned that no matter what I do or don't do, any action of mine that doesn't fit into their racist stereotypes just makes them feel/think I am the 'exception' rather than the rule. So it doesn't change their thinking any if they are racists.
My point was to make sure this got addressed and dealt with and to make sure my daughter would receive no repercussions for speaking up about this.

It is stunning to me that no matter how many examples they encounter, their perceptions are as fixed as ever; just adding exceptions on top of exceptions so that their behavior does not have to change.
I guess now that I have typed it out, white people are not the only ones who do this in order to protect their ignorance.
Trula, your comments in reference to the anger we encounter as mothers hit home for me. I have often found myself in a place where defending my anger seemed justified and essential to getting the desired result accomplished especially when it comes to what I perceive as the ill treatment of my children. But a few words on anger that I read recently in Sarah Napthai's Buddhism for Mothers softened my heart and brought me to a place where I could see that compassion (for myself, my children and any offending party) was a more precise sword than even the most focused anger:
“We can be assertive with others without giving in to anger. Anger in fact paves the way for future difficulties. For starters it is not good for our karma: every time we act angrily we increase the chance we’ll act angrily again, conditioning ourselves to become belligerent.”
I saw me in this observation and felt uncomfortable at the prospect of growing a permanent shell of belligerence.
I have since practiced this kind of compassion with unconscious educators and the outcome as it relates to my fear and frustration levels as well as the practical matter of solving my child’s problem, was noticeably improved.
I'm totally jumping in this late but I think both your letter and your entire approach were just great. I'm happy to see you advocating for your daughter no matter what. I am sure I'll have similar situations with my own boys and it's nice to read the approach of other moms so I'll be mentally and emotionally prepared for the inevitable.

Well, I can't speak to there being NO racist ideas and attitudes, but I have always wanted to try out Yellow Springs. It is probably the closest thing to intentional community based on the ideas of man's basic duty to, and love for, one's fellow man and nature.
I was so excited when it looked like we might be headed that way a few years ago, but, alas...I'm at the Pacific, in a really scary place where the last bastion of the White urge to "Go West, Young Man," has bred an insular, "happy" community of folks who look nothing like me or most of mine.
To you, Trula (I've visited your photoblog thingie, and must say 'beau-ti-ful;' You make me yearn for more energy to consciously 'create' the mood and tone of family life.

I LOVED everything about the letter. Yes, it was long... but it was deep. I didn't think it sounded angry at all. It was rational and I think it was respectful. You don't owe her any explaination so your willingness to "go there" says a lot about you.

There is one geographic clue I have not addressed in years:::Uranus, a planet tilted 90 degrees on its axis. Among "reals" I don't expect the percentage to be as high as those who crossed the line from person to preditor, despite those ranks being filled with these "undesirables". I think the gods may want most if not all to pay if and when they finally "come around" and begin to behave appropriately. Understand this is not all-inclusive, for many of these tools remain in this state of corruption until the day the gods adjudicate their case (death, reincarnation a lesser life form, etc).

Consistant with this policy of not punishing evil because they are undesirable, the Chinese will be inflicted with Westernization immediately, while the socio-economically mature Japanese have retained a significant level of their culture. If you are particularly intelligent, strong or very good at an (competitive) activity they will instruct Artificial Intelligence to create an overconfidence that will hurt you.
Differentiate between your thoughts and when they push thoughts with the computer. Recognize when they are employing "magic":::Peaked euphoria is the fuel of dysfunction and can help you identify these "open doors" in your life.
